Sointula B.C. is a beautiful little community on Malcolm Island off the east coast of Vancouver Island. It is a 20 minute ferry ride from Port McNeill. The town was started in the early 1900′s by Finnish settlers and was a closed community for many years. I first stepped on the island 37 years ago and remember being checked out very closely by the natives of the island. I was visiting a couple of high school friends so I had reason to be there. My intentions were good so I was accepted.

Things have changed now and it is a very friendly and beautiful place to spend some lazy time in the summer. Their is a couple of campgrounds, at least one large lodge, and lots of B&B places in peoples homes. Most of these places are right on the beach. One campground is run by the community itself is at Bere Point, on the main whale watching beach. One of the main attractions is whale watching, which the locals of course love to do also.
